Meet the Organizers
Heartland Social Work Conference, a program of Heartland Counseling and Training, LLC. provides professional conferences and training opportunities designed specifically for social workers. Our goal is to deliver high-quality, practical learning experiences that support continuing education, strengthen professional skills, and enhance effective practice in diverse communities.
The organization is led by Becky Fast, MPA, LCSW, a social worker with more than three decades of experience spanning direct practice, public policy, advocacy, education, and professional training.
Becky began her clinical career providing mental health support to patients and their families through hospice care in Kansas City, Missouri, where she earned her clinical social work license. Her passion for serving communities led her to pursue graduate degrees in Social Work and Public Administration at the University of Kansas.
Following graduate school, Becky served as a public policy analyst at the University of Kansas, evaluating and helping improve the delivery of services for older adults and people with disabilities across Kansas. She co-authored training curricula and publications on strengths-based practices with older adults and provided training to aging-services case managers and social workers in Kansas, Pennsylvania, Colorado, New Mexico, and Canada. She also served as an adjunct faculty member at the University of Kansas and Washburn University for nearly a decade.
Becky later brought her social work expertise to the federal level as Constituent Services Director for former U.S. Congressman Dennis Moore of Kansas’ 3rd District. In that role, she also served as a practicum director, helping BSW students gain hands-on experience applying social work skills in a public policy and community setting.
In 2004, Kansas lost social worker Terri Zenner, who was killed while conducting a home visit with a client. In response, Becky worked with Congressman Moore to introduce the first social work safety legislation in Congress, bringing national attention to the safety concerns faced by social workers in the field.
In 2009, Becky was named Kansas Social Worker of the Year and was recognized in the U.S. Congressional Recordfor her public service and contributions to the social work profession.
From 2017 to 2025, Becky served as Executive Director of the National Association of Social Workers (NASW) Kansas Chapter, where she led advocacy and policy efforts on behalf of social workers throughout the state. During her tenure, she helped advance the passage of four landmark social work licensure laws through the Kansas Legislature, strengthening and expanding the profession across Kansas.
In 2026, Becky joined Preferra’s Liability Insurance Risk Management Education program for social workers and founded Heartland Counseling and Training, LLC. Through Heartland Social Work, she continues her commitment to professional education by bringing together experienced practitioners, educators, and leaders to provide relevant, practical, and meaningful learning opportunities for today’s social workers.
